NRA, CRS Mend Ties After Tax Dispute Clarification

More News

The National Revenue Authority (NRA) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) have reaffirmed their commitment to mutual cooperation and transparency following a high-level meeting aimed at resolving a recent tax dispute.

The meeting, held at the NRA Headquarters in Freetown, came in the wake of a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report that listed CRS among entities with alleged outstanding tax liabilities. CRS strongly objected to the inclusion, stating it had already submitted evidence of payment to Parliament.

NRA Commissioner General Jeneba J. Bangura acknowledged the concerns raised and reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to accuracy and taxpayer rights. “While we respect the constitutional oversight role of the PAC, we are dedicated to ensuring that all taxpayer issues receive due process,” Bangura said. “We regret any unintended reputational harm caused to CRS, a valued development partner.”

Bangura emphasized that moving forward, the NRA will engage directly with affected institutions before public disclosures are made, in an effort to uphold fairness and build trust.

The CRS Country Representative, Ms. Jeanne Ella Andrianambinina, had earlier addressed a formal letter to the PAC Chairman expressing deep concern over the publication of an alleged SLE628,774.40 tax liability. She reiterated that CRS had already submitted sworn evidence of payment and relevant documentation. During the meeting, the NRA confirmed receipt of all necessary records, including ITAS lodgments and bank receipts, to facilitate a full reconciliation.

Both organizations praised the open and constructive nature of the dialogue, describing it as a model for institutional cooperation. CRS commended the NRA’s prompt and professional response to the issue, while the NRA expressed appreciation for CRS’s longstanding contributions to national development.

The NRA concluded by reiterating its commitment to a fair and transparent tax administration, grounded in strong partnerships with all stakeholders.
