Sierra Leone has recorded a 31% decline in maternal mortality and an 11% reduction in infant deaths within the first 100 days of a nationwide health campaign, the Ministry of Health said.
Health Minister Dr. Austin Demby said the gains were achieved under the government’s “300 Days of Activism” campaign, which targets improvements in maternal and child health.
Demby attributed the progress to the combined efforts of healthcare workers, community leaders and district officials, while stressing the need to sustain momentum.
The campaign has also reduced the number of unvaccinated children by nearly 50%, officials said, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s immunisation coverage.
Despite the progress, the minister said further work was needed to consolidate the gains and address remaining challenges in reducing maternal and infant mortality.
Sierra Leone has historically faced high rates of maternal and child deaths, and authorities say the campaign forms part of broader efforts to improve healthcare delivery and build a more resilient health system.
