DUBAI, Brima Katta, managing director of Sierra Leone’s postal service SALPOST, attended the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai this week, holding talks aimed at modernising the country’s mail network, the agency said on Friday.

The meeting, organised by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), gathered ministers, regulators and policymakers from the U.N. body’s 192 member states to discuss the growth of postal services worldwide.

UPU Director General Masahiko Metoki told delegates the congress was a chance to “build common solutions” for the sector despite differences in regions, development levels or business models.

SALPOST said Katta negotiated the restoration of Sierra Leone’s full rights and privileges within the UPU and reached agreement with the UPU’s Postal Technology Centre to deploy a domestic track-and-trace system for mail and parcels. The new platform, known as the Domestic Postal System (DPS), is intended to strengthen logistics for government agencies, e-commerce firms, small businesses and individual users.

The congress concluded with the signing of its final act, witnessed by Sierra Leone’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Rashid Sesay.
