Journalists Trained to Tackle FGM & Gender Violence in Port Loko

The Amazonian Initiative Movement Sierra Leone (AIM-SL), led by Executive Director Madam Rugiatu Neneh Turay, hosted a one-day training workshop on Monday, May 26, 2025, for members of the Sierra Leone Parliamentary Press Gallery. The event, held at 24 Conteh Street in Port Loko City, focused on enhancing media engagement in addressing gender-based violence and harmful traditional practices.

The session brought together experienced journalists, media professionals, and civil society actors for in-depth discussions and knowledge-sharing on the role of the press in protecting women’s rights.

In her keynote address, Madam Turay highlighted the persistent violence faced by women and girls in Sierra Leone. She addressed physical, psychological, and socio-economic abuse, with particular focus on the cultural traditions of the Bondo society and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). She emphasized the long-lasting physical and emotional trauma caused by FGM, calling on the media to challenge cultural justifications and raise public awareness.

“Journalists are not just reporters; you are advocates, educators, and defenders of truth,” Madam Turay urged. “We need the media to amplify voices that demand change and justice for women and girls.”

The training featured interactive discussions, allowing journalists to share personal experiences and explore topics such as legal reform, community resistance, and the power of education in shifting cultural attitudes.

Participants praised the workshop for its relevance and pledged to use their platforms more intentionally to spotlight women’s issues and strengthen collaborations with advocacy groups.

AIM-SL distributed educational resources, including fact sheets on the impact of FGM, national gender laws, and guidelines for ethical reporting on survivors of violence.

In closing, Madam Turay reaffirmed AIM-SL’s commitment to partnering with the media in the fight against gender-based violence. She called for ongoing dialogue, stronger law enforcement, and grassroots education to create lasting change.

The workshop ended on a note of unity and determination, with AIM-SL and the Parliamentary Press Gallery aligned in their mission to advance the rights and safety of women and girls across Sierra Leone.
