Sierra Leoneans can now make international digital payments using their mobile phones following the launch of the Orange Money Mastercard, a virtual card linked to mobile wallets.

The service, introduced by Orange Money in partnership with Mastercard and Zenith Bank Sierra Leone, allows users to carry out online transactions, pay for subscriptions and access global digital services directly from their Orange Money accounts.

The virtual card, launched in late March, can be generated and managed through the Orange Money platform without the need for a physical debit card, bridging a long-standing gap for users who previously lacked access to international payment tools.

Industry players say the initiative is expected to boost financial inclusion and support economic activity by enabling individuals and small businesses to participate in global e-commerce and digital markets.

“This solution allows users… to make online purchases, pay for subscriptions, and access a multitude of digital services internationally,” Orange said in a statement.

Officials added that the product could help reduce reliance on cash transactions while improving efficiency and access to financial services in a country where mobile money is widely used but international payment options have been limited.

The launch reflects a broader push by telecom operators across Africa to expand into financial services, as digital payments and mobile banking continue to grow rapidly across the continent.
