Sierra Leone’s Tripartite Steering Committee Secretariat (TSCS) on Wednesday urged civil society groups to strengthen cooperation in monitoring and supporting reforms aimed at improving governance and electoral processes.
Tripartite Coordinator Ngolo Katta made the call while meeting the Civil Society Coordinating Committee on the Election Observation Mission (EOM) and Tripartite Recommendations, a coalition including the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Campaign for Good Governance (CGG), Women’s Forum and Budget Advocacy Network.
“I call on you to foster and uphold cooperation as we partner, plan and identify activities to add value to government endeavours, and harvest a social capital rewarding to our citizens and to the state,” Katta said.
The TSCS has in recent weeks intensified engagement with non-state actors, the Office of National Security, the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone and development partners to track implementation of recommendations from election observers and the tripartite dialogue process.
Katta said progress had been made, including a draft report by the Attorney General’s office on legislative reforms and constitutional review, which will be submitted for public consultation.
Committee chairman Abubakarr Tarawallie welcomed the meeting, saying it would help promote multi-stakeholder collaboration on civic education and monitoring of reforms.
The tripartite mechanism, supported by the UN Development Programme and the government, is designed to strengthen democratic institutions, improve service delivery and foster national cohesion following tensions around past elections.
