Port Loko Treatment Plant Gets New Transformer
In a move to continue to provide safe drinking water for people, the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) in Port Loko has welcomed a new transformer for its treatment plant, a move that has widely been commended by all and sundry. Reports indicate that thunder had earlier damaged the old transformer, much to the dissatisfaction of management, staff and residents of Port Loko, Northern Sierra Leone, in particular. It was against such backdrop that SALWACO’s Station Manager in Port Loko, Ing. Hamid A. Kamara communicated with the SALWACO leadership to see that the problem of the nonfunctional transformer was fixed and in the best interest of company policy, which is to provide safe drinking water for people. In a similar vein, Ing. Hamid and team had earlier engaged stakeholders like the Resident Minister North, City Mayor, Council Chairman, the leadership of EDSA in Port Loko and a number of other engineers to see that the transformer problem was looked into with a thrust to address same. On getting the new transformer, Ing. Hamid is quoted as saying ‘I am very thankful and grateful to extend since gratitude to our Managing Director, Ing. SALWACO Supports Govt.’s Feed Salone Initiative
The Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) is currently installing tanks in Kailahun, which will provide safe drinking water for people; a move that has been sanctioned by management to support government’s flagship, Feed Salone Initiative. The World Food Programme (WFP) celebration is scheduled to take place in Kailahun between 16th-18th October, 2024. SALWACO is charged with the responsibility of providing safe drinking water for people in the provinces and the latest move is a clear manifestation of that mandate. Leading the installation is Ing. FAHP RAISES CONCERN OVER TORTURE INCIDENT AT KANGAMA GORAMA TOWN

The event was held on Friday 11th October 2024 at SLAJ office Harry Yansaneh Hall Campbell Street Freetown.According to a press statement read while addressing reporters ;‘’The attention of the Forum Against Harmful Practices (FAHP) has been drawn to arecent unfortunate incidence of physical and emotional torture of a woman (whosename is withheld for now) by a group of women at a Bondo Bush in Kangama town,Gorama Chiefdom, Kono District.The press release further states that FAHP wishes to express extreme concern over theinhumane, degrading, and human rights violation perpetrated against this woman.” This gruesome crime was heartlessly carried out at a place that Ought to be secure andmaintain the dignity of the Sierra Leonean woman: but rather, it represented a place oftorture, a prison, and a perfect hide-out to execute such a serious offense.“The victim was physically assaulted with visible grievous bodily harm, beaten anddisgraced to the extent of shaving her head and her private part., and to make mattersworse, she was even forced to drink a Concoction (manessie) which made her sufferfrom psychological trauma”. The release states. Forum Against Harmful Practices(FAHP) recognizes that the incident in question ispresently a subject matter of Police investigation. However, the circumstances that led to such barbaric conduct has no place in modern time civilization and particularly so,Cannot be applauded by the Law of Sierra Leone, No one is above the Law and therefore should not take the Law into their own hands to the extent of torturing, imprisoning and assaulting the victim in such a manner. The state said. This incident brings to clear sight some of the unknown and secret cruelty that goes onin some of these Bondo bush places and it gives a further insight into the possible manycrimes that have taken place and may continue to be carried out in these places if due care and attention is not given to the dire concerns of well-meaning Organizations likethe Forum Against Harmful Practices (FAHP) which are tirelessly bringing to the attention of Government and other stakeholders of the growing incidents been perpetuated inthese Bondo Bushes. PW3 Testifies In Sia Alleged Murdered Trial
By Feima Sesay Christian Martin Kamara, the 3rd prosecution witness in the ongoing murder trial of Abdul Kpaka (accused) who allegedly killed his girlfriend, Sia Fatu Kamara, on Friday 11th October 2024 told the court what he knows about the matter. The witness led in his examination in chief by State Lawyer Yusuf Isaac Sesay before Justice AIhaji Momoh Jah Stevens stated that he knew Sia as his first cousin and the accused Abdul Kpaka as a boyfriend to the deceased. He further said on the 13th August 2024, he received several missed calls from his younger brother, Raymond Bami Coker, and other family members informing him about Sia’s death.He continued that, he asked his brother for their location and he told him that they were at Sia’s house Metchem, Goderich in Freetown. He stated that upon receipt of the information at around 3 pm, he left his house for the scene but while on his way, his brother informed him that they were taking Sia’s body to the Virtues funeral home at Kingtom . The witness said he later went at the funeral home . He said upon arrival at the funeral home, himself, Sylvester Patrick Kamara, Raymond Culker, the accused and other family members took Sia’s body inside the funeral parlor. He told the court that the Manager of the funeral home, Princess Wilson, received Sia’s body and she addressed them. The witness said the manager told them that she usually unwrapped corpses to know if that individual had any valuable items and she took a photo to indicate if there were any valuable items with Sia. “My Lord, when the manager unwrapped Sia’s body, it was so devastating because I saw a cut on her upper lip, blood stain on her lower lip, a red mark on her temple, swelling on her lower jaw, bruise on her chest, and knees, upon seeing this, I started crying,” he testified. He explained that upon seeing the condition of the deceased, PW 2, Sylvester took photos of the deceased, later, the three of them went outside of the funeral home and said what they saw on the deceased showed that she did not die of heart attack. According to him, the manager wanted to preserve the deceased but they asked her to wait and they later went to the Central police station and reported the matter, but they were referred to Adonki police station , Goderich because that was where the incident occurred. He said they went back to the funeral home at Kingtom and informed the family members to go home for a meeting. He added that the three of them later went to Adonki police station and reported the matter. He noted that they were later given three police officers, and that upon arrival at the house, they handed Kpaka over to the police officer for further investigations. He said that he and his brothers, including the accused, made statements.He said that on August 14th, 2024 the matter was transferred to the Lumley police station where he also made a statement. At the end of his testimony, he was cross examined by led defense counsel Emmanuel Teddy Koroma.The matter was adjourned to Friday 18th October 2024 for further hearing.
Magistrate Orders For Nigerian arrest with 20 pallet Cocaine to be Assessed by Prison’s Doctor
By Feima Sesay Momodu Rakib, a Nigerian Businessman who was arrested with 20 pallets of cocaine at the Freetown International Airport, has been granted access to be assessed by the doctors at the Male Correctional Center in Freetown where he was remanded in custody. State prosecutor I. A. Kamara told the court that the first prosecution was unavoidably absent to complete his testimony in the matter. The defense lawyer S. M. Kargbo informed the court that the accused person was complaining about his Samsung A71, Samsung S20, iPhone 15 Pro Max and a brown belt which he had no idea of where they were, to be restored to him. Kargbo stated that no other person had claimed the said items saved the accused who had been in custody. He made his application pursuant to section 59 subsection 1 which states that the court should return the property of an accused upon his or her arrest. Sulaiman Mohamed Kargbo argued that even if the court decided not to give his client the said property, he should at least know that they are available and safe. Kamara replied that the said items were not marked in the accused’s document and objected that the said properties were not before the court as exhibits tendered in court were only returned to their owner upon the the logical conclusion of the said matter which was not the case for the before the court at the moment. Magistrate Kekura having heard the application and obligation of both counsel ruled that the said items be brought to court on the next adjourned date to form part of the court’s record. The defense further informed the court that his client’s medical condition was not improving and applied that a medical examination be done on him in oder to know the medical issues his client was faced with. Kamara did not object to the application of the defense, Magistrate Kekura refused bail, granted the medical request and instructed the doctors at the Correctional Center to do proper medical examination of the accused. The matter was adjourned to Thursday October 10, 2024.
Cashier On Remand For Theft
By Feima Sesay Kumba Sesay, a cashier, has on Monday 7th October 2024 sent to the female correctional facility by Magistrate Santigie Bangura of Pademba road Court No2 for allegedly embezzling over 100 million leones from Ishmael Foreign exchange Bureau. The accused made her firs appearance and was charged with one count of Embezzlement contrary to section 17(b) of the Larceny act 1916. According to the charges sheet, the accused on a date between 12th July and 13th September 2024, at Freetown Road Lumley fraudulently embezzled the sum of NLe 117,191 received by her for an account of Ishmael Foreign Exchange Bureau. When the charge was read to her, no plea was taken. The Prosecution Witness No1 Mohamed Alieu Bah led in evidence by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sorie Conteh said he was the supervisor at Ishmael Foreign Exchange Beruau and that he headed the branch at Lumley. He recognized the accused as one of their cashier, adding that her responsibility was to pay customers and at the end of the day of transacted the balance cash remaining will be kept by her and the following day she would be used it to start the transaction. According to him, the accused had been tampering with the monies without their knowledge. At this juncture, the prosecutor requested for an adjourment to have proper conference with the witness. Magistrate Bangura however granted their application and adjourned the matter to 14th October 2024 for further hearing whiles the accused was remanded in prison.
Military Officers In Court For Alleged Theft At SLRA
By Feima Sesay Military officers – Mohamed Buya Fofanah and Idrissa Conteh have on Thursday 3rd October 2024 dragged to court before Magistrate Santigie Bangura of Pademba road court No.2 over an alleged theft of Solar batteries and panels at SLRA office in Lungi. The accused made his first appearance and was arraigned on two count charges of Store breaking and larceny contrary to section 26 (1) of the Larceny Act 1916 and Receiving stolen goods contrary to section 33 (1) of the Larceny Act 1916. According to the particulars of offence on 16th July 2024 at the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) compound Kirma Portloko Road Lungi Kafu bullom Chiefdom portloko District, North-West region broke and entered into the store at the Sierra Leone Roads Authority compound and stole therein six solar batteries, thirty four solar panels all to the total value of seventy nine thousand Leones(79,000) property of the Sierra Leone Roads Authority While count two further stated that the second accused person on the same date and place did receive two solar panels all to the total value of two thousand Leones(2,000) from Mohamed Boya Fofanah knowing same to have been stolen. When the charges were read and explained to the accused person, no plea was taken. The second accused was absent in court. The prosecutor Detective Police Constable Thoronka K.K applied for a bench warrant against the second accused person who was absent in court and sought for a short date to subpoena his witness. Magistrate Bangura granted the application and remanded the first accused in prison while the matter was adjourned to the 10th October 2024.

The accused was arraigned on five Count charges of Possession of a prohibited drug without lawful authority, Dealing in a prohibited drug without lawful authority, transportation of a prohibited drug without lawful authority, commercialization of a prohibited drug without lawful authority and keeping a prohibited drug. According to the particulars of offence on Saturday 14th September 2024 at the Freetown International Airport Lungi, Port Loko District in the Northern province in Freetown was found in possession of twenty pellets of cocaine without lawful authority. Count two further stated that the accused on the same date and place dealt with prohibited drugs Cocaine without lawful authority. The police further alleged on count three that the accused on the same date and place transported drugs without lawful authority. It was also alleged on count 4 that the accused person commercialized prohibited drugs. Whiles count five added that on the same date and place the accused person kept prohibited drugs without lawful authority. When the charges were read and explained to the accused person, no plea taken. The state prosecutor I.A Kamara Esq. sought for an adjournment for him to get proper conference with his witness. Meanwhile, Magistrate Kekura refused bail and sent the accused person to the male correctional facility in Freetown and the matter was adjourned to the 8th October 2024.

Sekou Amadou Bah, CEO Orange Sierra Leone, in his message, underscored the company’s mission to positively impact Sierra Leoneans’ daily lives through responsible digital solutions. “At Orange, our success is measured not just by financial performance but by the positive difference we make in society and the environment,” he stated.
