In a timely boost to Sierra Leone’s public health efforts, the West African Health Organization (WAHO), through its Regional Center for Surveillance and Disease Control (RCSDC), has donated 150 infrared thermometers to support the country’s ongoing response to the Mpox epidemic.

The donation was officially handed over by Dr. Babacar Fall of the RCSDC to the Executive Director of the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), Professor Foday Sahr, during a brief ceremony in Freetown.

Professor Sahr, receiving the consignment on behalf of the NPHA, expressed gratitude to WAHO for the support, describing it as a vital contribution to the country’s disease surveillance and early detection capabilities.

“This donation strengthens our frontline capacity to screen and monitor for Mpox in high-risk areas,” he said. “We deeply appreciate WAHO’s continued partnership in protecting the health and wellbeing of Sierra Leoneans.”

Infrared thermometers are an essential tool in epidemic response, allowing for non-contact temperature screening that helps detect potential cases quickly while minimizing the risk of transmission.

The Mpox outbreak, which has affected several countries in the region, has prompted increased vigilance from public health authorities in Sierra Leone. The donation forms part of broader regional support coordinated by WAHO to ensure countries are better equipped to detect, contain, and manage infectious disease outbreaks.

Dr. Fall reiterated WAHO’s commitment to strengthening public health systems across West Africa. “This support is part of our ongoing efforts to assist member states in responding effectively to public health emergencies,” he said.

The NPHA is expected to deploy the thermometers across entry points, health facilities, and surveillance teams as part of its national epidemic preparedness strategy.
