Professor Osman Sankoh COR, widely known as Mallam O., Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Management and Technology (UNIMTECH), has been appointed to the Editorial Board of BMC Public Health, one of the world’s leading peer-reviewed journals published by Springer Nature.

The journal focuses on epidemiology and the social, economic, and environmental determinants of health and is internationally respected for publishing high-impact, policy-relevant research. Professor Sankoh’s appointment underscores both his personal achievements in public health and the growing prominence of UNIMTECH on the global academic stage.

In a statement, Professor Sankoh described the appointment as a major milestone for the university.
“This is a great honour both for me personally and for UNIMTECH as an institution committed to advancing research, innovation, and global collaboration. It reflects our readiness to contribute meaningfully to the international public health discourse,” he said.

Mallam O. brings to the role more than a decade of editorial experience. He currently serves as Associate Editor of Tropical Medicine and International Health and sits on the International Advisory Board of The Lancet Global Health. He also previously held editorial positions with PLOS ONE and the International Journal of Epidemiology until stepping down in 2018 to take on national responsibilities.

As a member of the BMC Public Health Editorial Board, he will help steer the journal’s editorial strategy, review scholarly manuscripts, and promote research that addresses public health challenges in both high- and low-resource settings.

UNIMTECH officials welcomed the news, calling it a reflection of the university’s commitment to academic excellence and its increasing role in global research networks.

The university also reaffirmed its dedication to producing scholarship that improves lives in Sierra Leone and beyond.
