Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has updated residents of Port Loko District on the progress and plans for the upcoming 2026 Decennial Population and Housing Census, emphasizing the importance of public participation in the nationwide exercise.

Addressing attendees during the second edition of the Civic Day Series organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE), Deputy Statistician-General Lansana Kpewolo Kanneh outlined key developments, including the establishment of the Census Secretariat, the formation of working committees, and the recruitment of technical experts by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Kanneh highlighted that Stats SL has already begun the hiring process for various temporary positions and underscored the significance of local ownership and active participation in ensuring the success of the census.

“The people’s cooperation is critical in informing national planning, equitable resource distribution, and effective policy formulation,” he stated, reiterating Stats SL’s commitment to making the 2026 Census as inclusive and people-centered as possible.

The event attracted prominent figures, including Mayor of Port Loko City Council Alieu Badara Tarawally, District Council Chairman Sheku Tejan Saccoh, and representatives from security agencies, youth groups, market women’s associations, and educational institutions.

Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback, making the session both interactive and informative.
