Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio said violence against women must be treated as a criminal offence rather than a cultural practice, calling for stronger action to protect women’s rights.

Speaking during commemorations for International Women’s Day in 2026, Bio said abuse against women and girls could not be justified by tradition or social norms.

“Violence against women is not tradition. It is an injustice, a crime, and it must end now,” the president said.

Bio emphasized the need for governments and institutions to move beyond declarations and ensure that justice systems work effectively for victims.

“Rights must not only be declared but defended, justice must not only exist but be accessible, and action must not only be promised but sustained,” he said.

Gender rights advocates in Sierra Leone have long called for stronger enforcement of laws aimed at protecting women and girls, particularly in cases involving domestic abuse and gender-based violence.

Authorities say addressing violence against women remains a key priority as the country continues efforts to strengthen legal protections and improve access to justice for victims.
