Sierra Leone Unlocks Free Roaming in West Africa to Boost Regional Integration

More News

Sierra Leonean travelers can now roam freely across parts of West Africa without facing steep mobile charges, thanks to a landmark move by the National Communications Authority (NatCA).

Under new agreements with Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, and Liberia, mobile users can receive calls for free for up to 30 days and access local call and data rates while abroad. The rollout falls under the ECOWAS Free Roaming and Abidjan Protocols, aimed at fostering affordable regional communication and supporting economic mobility.

The initiative also covers 300 free incoming call minutes under broader bilateral pacts signed with five ECOWAS countries. After this threshold, standard roaming fees apply.

Users can activate the service through their local operators—Africell or Orange—by dialing specific shortcodes.

NatCA says the plan is part of the government’s broader push to make Sierra Leone a leader in digital connectivity across the region.
