Sierra Leone on Tuesday received 37 tons of building materials airlifted from Turkey by MNG Airlines, in a move aimed at advancing the construction of a state-of-the-art hotel and International Conference Centre.
The materials arrived at Freetown International Airport under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance and other stakeholders, who held a meeting to reaffirm commitment to the timely completion of the project.
Finance Minister Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura commended S&B Group of Companies for delivering the cargo despite logistical challenges in the Middle East. “These facilities are intended for generations yet unborn,” he said, urging the contractor to continue employing Sierra Leoneans and to ensure high-quality construction, including a parking facility for 1,000 vehicles.
Dr. Eldred Taylor, Chairman of the Presidential Infrastructure Initiative, highlighted the significance of airlifting materials for project deadlines and called for the development of access roads to connect the airport. He also stressed the importance of community support from Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom, the primary host area.
Ibrahim Sheriff, Country Director at Freetown International Airport, said the project is of strategic importance not only for Sierra Leone but for the West African subregion, and pledged daily monitoring to ensure progress. Edmond Joseph Sesay, Branch Manager of Lungi Vista Banks, reaffirmed the financial sector’s backing for the initiative.
Representatives from S&B Group of Companies expressed gratitude to the government and stakeholders, reaffirming their readiness to complete the project on schedule.
Officials said the conference centre and hotel are expected to attract investors, diplomats, and other dignitaries, contributing to Sierra Leone’s economic development and regional prominence.
