Only 15% of Sierra Leone’s fertile land is currently under cultivation, according to Agriculture Minister Henry Musa Kpaka. He says President Julius Maada Bio’s administration is accelerating efforts to increase yields and achieve food security for the country’s 8.4 million people.
The drive comes after decades of underinvestment in farming, compounded by the destruction of the civil war. Government plans include expanding cultivated land, modernising farming techniques, and supporting smallholder farmers to meet the nation’s growing food needs.
