Sierra Leone has opened an investigation into reports that a Turkish national arrested in Europe for alleged involvement in drug trafficking was found carrying a Sierra Leonean diplomatic passport, the government said on Monday.
The Sierra Leone Immigration Department (SLID) said in a statement that it had taken note of reports from Dutch, German, and Sierra Leonean media linking the suspect to criminal and drug-related activities.
“The Government and SLID view these allegations with utmost seriousness. Protecting the integrity of Sierra Leone’s diplomatic privileges and national reputation is a top priority,” the statement said.
President Julius Maada Bio has ordered a “thorough investigation” to determine how the individual obtained the diplomatic passport, verify the authenticity of supporting documents, and identify any procedural failures or misconduct, the department said.
SLID also announced a wider audit into the issuance and use of all diplomatic passports to ensure accountability and prevent future abuse.
“The Sierra Leone Immigration Department reaffirms its commitment to integrity, transparency, and upholding the nation’s image. Any confirmed wrongdoing will attract swift disciplinary and legal action,” the statement added.
The public notice was issued by the Office of the Chief Immigration Officer on October 13, 2025.
