Sierra Leone’s Inter-Religious Council on Tuesday condemned the killing of a Catholic priest who was attacked by unidentified armed men at his parish residence in the eastern city of Kenema.
Rev. Father Augustine Dauda Amadu of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church was fatally assaulted on Aug. 30, the council said in a statement. His death has shocked the Catholic community and wider religious groups in the country.
“Father Amadu was a man of peace, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the spiritual and social upliftment of his community,” the council said. “His untimely death is not only a devastating loss to the Catholic Church but also to the broader social fabric of Sierra Leone.”
The Inter-Religious Council called on authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation and ensure justice is served.
The group also urged Sierra Leoneans to remain calm and united, warning that violence against religious leaders threatens peace and interfaith harmony.
Amadu’s killing has drawn widespread condolences, with the council pledging solidarity with the Catholic Diocese of Kenema, his family, and parishioners.
