A gender-based violence awareness campaign in Sierra Leone has reached 200 participants across four districts as part of activities marking the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, organisers said.
The initiative, led by Media Matters for Women in collaboration with UN Women and supported by Irish Aid, focused on raising awareness under the theme “End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.”
The “Under the Tree” campaign was conducted in Kenema, Bombali, Karene and Western Rural districts between November 27 and December 2, 2025, according to a report released by organisers.
Each district hosted about 50 participants, including traditional leaders, religious leaders, women’s group representatives and youth stakeholders.
The programme included community drama performances addressing sexual and gender-based violence (GBV), education sessions on legal frameworks, and discussions on mental and physical wellness. A session on parenting focused on non-violent discipline and child welfare.
Organisers said participants gained increased awareness of GBV prevention, referral pathways and relevant laws, including provisions relating to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The campaign also promoted digital safety and community-based approaches to reducing violence against women and girls.
Organisers said sustainability committees were formed to continue advocacy efforts at district level following the conclusion of the campaign.
