Authorities in Sierra Leone have seized two suitcases containing suspected marshmallow leaves, a key substance used in the production of the synthetic drug known locally as “Kush,” during an operation at a residence on Brook Street, officials said.

The discovery was made by the Special Task Force on drugs at number 17 Brook Street, where the occupant, an elderly woman identified as “Mama Marie,” was taken into custody.

Andrew Jaiah KaiKai, head of the task force, said the suspect would be handed over to the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) for further investigation.

“We discovered two suitcases of marshmallow leaves believed to be used in the manufacture of Kush,” KaiKai said, adding that investigations were ongoing to determine the extent of the operation and possible links to wider drug networks.

The seizure comes amid increasing concern over the spread of Kush, a synthetic drug that has raised alarm among health officials and law enforcement agencies in Sierra Leone due to its harmful effects and growing use among young people.

Authorities have in recent months intensified crackdowns on the production and distribution of the drug, which is often linked to organized criminal activity.

No further details were immediately available.
