Orange Money, in partnership with Zenith Bank Sierra Leone and Mastercard, on Thursday launched the Orange Money Mastercard, a virtual companion card designed to expand digital financial access and connect customers to global payment networks.

The launch, held at the Atlantic Hotel in Freetown, was attended by government officials, Members of Parliament, regulators, and leaders from the financial and digital payments sectors.

Orange Money Sierra Leone CEO, David Mansaray, described the card as the first of its kind in the country, enabling secure online payments, subscriptions to international services, and mobile wallet transactions. “Many people want to shop online or access global platforms but lack debit cards or digital payment tools. This solution removes those barriers,” he said.

Zenith Bank Sierra Leone CEO, Ugochukwu Irechukwu, highlighted the benefits for individuals and small businesses, including faster payments, improved cash flow, and safer financial transactions. He said the card would particularly support small and medium enterprises, which form a key part of the country’s economy.

Mastercard Country Manager for Sierra Leone, Ghana, Liberia and The Gambia, Bossman Kwapong, said the rollout reflects strong collaboration and positions Sierra Leone as a leader in regional digital finance innovation. He noted that the country’s youthful population and increasing mobile penetration make it well suited for digital financial expansion.

Paymentology Senior Account Executive for Sub-Saharan Africa, Didi Makhubela, explained that her company provides the processing engine behind the card, ensuring seamless transaction processing and reliability.

Orange Sierra Leone CEO, Aïcha Touré, said the card bridges access gaps for young people, entrepreneurs and travelers, allowing them to participate in the global digital economy.

National Communications Authority Director General, Amara Brewah, described the launch as a milestone in the country’s digital transformation, emphasizing the importance of institutional collaboration in driving innovation.

Bank of Sierra Leone Governor, Ibrahim Stevens, said the card represents a significant step toward building a modern, inclusive financial ecosystem, allowing users to make local and international payments, point-of-sale transactions, ATM withdrawals, and online purchases.

The Orange Money Mastercard launch is seen as a key development in Sierra Leone’s push for financial inclusion, digital innovation, and participation in the global economy.
