Earlier today, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr participated in a virtual discussion with the senior management group of the United Nations, which was chaired by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.
The discussion focused on how the UN can provide support at the country level to strengthen the work cities do on development, humanitarian issues, peacebuilding issues etc.
The Senior Management Group is made up of UN entities that focus on providing operational support at the country level (it is not about what national governments who meet at the UN in NY do).
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr was invited to present to the Senior Management Group on how COVID-19 is changing Freetown and its needs, provide her perspective on how the UN works at city level and the type of support that cities would need in the future.
In attendance were Sierra Leone’s Madam Zainab Hawa Bangura, Director General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi and Madam Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director of UN Habitat amongst others.
