Guinea’s main opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo, who is living in exile, said “direct resistance” to the country’s military-led government may now be the only path to political change after authorities dissolved dozens of political parties.

Diallo said the move by the administration of Mamady

Doumbouya leaves opposition groups with limited options other than protests, strikes and public demonstrations rather than relying on elections or dialogue.

Guinea’s authorities recently ordered the dissolution of around 40 political parties, saying the organisations failed to meet legal requirements, including submitting financial reports and complying with administrative regulations.

Several of the affected parties have rejected the accusations, arguing the move is politically motivated.

Among the dissolved parties were Diallo’s Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea and the Rally of the Guinean People, the political party of former president Alpha Condé.

Under the government order, party offices are to be closed, their logos and symbols banned, and their assets seized.

The decision has heightened political tensions in Guinea, where the military government led by Doumbouya seized power in 2021 Guinean coup d’état, pledging to oversee a transition back to civilian rule.

Opposition groups and civil society organisations have increasingly criticised delays in the transition process, warning that restrictions on political activity could further deepen the country’s political crisis.
