The government of Sierra Leone has suspended the Timber Logging and Transportation until further notice. On the 25 July, 2023 the Ministry of Internal Affairs release a press release which states: “As the public may be aware, every year, as a means of addressing the rampant timber logging and transporting, with its attendant environmental impacts, the Ministry of Internal Affairs places a ban on logging and transporting of timber within and out of the Country particularly during the rainy season, from 1st June to 31 October. However, in order to give adequate notification to those involved in the timber business, the Ministry has resolved that the said suspension takes effect from 1st August to 31st October 2023. Against this backdrop, the Ministry of Internal Affairs charged with the responsibility to oversee the internal security of the Country, is encouraging all relevant Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs) and other Stakeholders to coordinate and cooperate in the enforcement of the suspension on timber logging and transporting by the public during the rainy season for the stipulated period” the press statement said.
The Ministry further warns that: “Any challenges relating to compliance of this suspension during the rainy season must be referred to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for immediate action.”
