The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), has announced a significant development in the country’s power sector with the extension of its partnership with Karpowership. The agreement includes an increase in electricity supply and a one-year contract extension.
In a joint press statement issued on Monday, the Ministry revealed that Karpowership has agreed to ramp up its power generation to 25 megawatts (MW) during the rainy season and 45MW in the dry season. The move is expected to improve energy access and reduce outages for homes and businesses across the country.
This latest breakthrough follows a negotiated settlement between the Government and Karpowership regarding outstanding debt. The agreement includes a debt restructuring plan, a step both parties say will strengthen their collaboration and ensure continued energy delivery.
“The Ministry expresses thanks and appreciation to Karpowership for the mutual understanding and shared commitment to providing accessible and reliable electricity,” the statement read.
Both the Ministry and Karpowership affirmed their commitment to the socio-economic development of Sierra Leone, emphasizing that this extended partnership will support the government’s long-term energy policy goals.
The announcement was signed by Austine A.K. Luseni, Communications Specialist at the Ministry of Energy, and Yankay Sawaneh, Country Manager for Karpowership.
