Freetown sanitation continues despite mayoral boycott

Essential waste management services in Freetown continue uninterrupted, even as Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and most city councillors maintain a principled boycott, city officials said on Wednesday.

Daily early-morning street sweeping, organized under systems established during Aki-Sawyerr’s tenure, has kept streets clean and contributed to safeguarding public health. City communications highlighted the efforts of young women and youth who sustain the operations, ensuring Freetown remains prepared for the rainy season.

The mayor’s office praised the dedication of sanitation workers, describing their work as critical to building a cleaner, more resilient city and maintaining continuity of services despite political disruptions.

The ongoing operations underscore the durability of institutional systems in delivering public services beyond the presence of individual officeholders.
