At a press conference held yesterday 21/05/24 at the Brookfields Hotel nine highly respected former presidents of the Sierra Leone Bar Association ( SLBA) signed a communique condemning and asking for the nullification of the SLBA election held over the weekend in Kenema.
They expressed their collective disapproval of the violence and disruptions that spoiled the Association’s recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Kenema on May 17th and 18th, 2024.
Signed by prominent legal figures including Charles Francis Margai, Emmanue Shears Moses, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara,
Francis Gabbidon, Abdul Tejan-Cole, Elvis Kargbo, Ibrahim Sorie Kamara, Rhoda Sufian-Kargbo, and Basita Michael
the letter highlights their profound concerns regarding the behaviour exhibited by certain members at the event, which they deemed incompatible with the fundamental values of the legal profession.
In unequivocal terms, the past presidents denounced the violent incidents that occurred during the AGM, emphasizing that such actions run counter to the ethical standards and principles that govern their esteemed profession.
Furthermore, the former presidents strongly criticized any attempts to disenfranchise members and obstruct their right to participate in the democratic process of electing new leadership. They have called for a thorough investigation into these matters.
In light of the gravity of the situation, the former presidents are advocating for the annulment of the AGM results and are advocating for the conducting of new elections that uphold the highest standards of fairness, transparency, and impartiality.
They emphasized the importance of ensuring that all eligible members can exercise their voting rights without fear of intimidation or hindrance.
The communique also urges the current leadership of SLBA under the stewardship of Mrs Eddinia Swallow Sandy to take decisive measures to rectify the identified irregularities and improprieties.
The former presidents underscore the importance for the Association to uphold the principles of the rule of law and democratic governance to restore faith and integrity within the legal community
Meanwhile, the International Bar Association (IBA), of which the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) is a member, is diligently monitoring the unfolding developments in Sierra Leone.
In light of the regrettable incident that transpired at the Annual General Meeting in Kenema over this past weekend, there is a distinct possibility that SLBA’s membership status within the prestigious IBA may face suspension.
