Filth Piles Up at Sierra Leone Government Hub as Cleanup Delayed

A growing pile of garbage at the Youyi Building, a key government complex housing ministers and senior officials in Sierra Leone, has sparked concern after authorities failed to clear the site as earlier indicated.

Waste remained heaped in a corner of the compound on Wednesday, with observers noting that the volume appeared to have increased days after officials said it would be removed.
The Youyi Building serves as one of the country’s main administrative centres, making the presence of visible filth at the premises a source of public criticism over sanitation standards at high-level government facilities.

Videos circulating on social media later showed workers shovelling the waste into a collection truck parked beside the site, suggesting that cleanup efforts were underway following the delay.
It was not immediately clear why the garbage had not been removed earlier or how long it had been accumulating at the location.
Urban sanitation remains a persistent challenge in parts of Freetown, particularly during the rainy season, with concerns often raised about waste management systems and public health risks.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement explaining the delay or outlining measures to prevent a recurrence at government premises.
