The Chairman of Energy Governance Coordination Group and Energy Sector Lead,Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, has conducted an inspection tour of the Kingtom and Blackhall Road power stations to have a firsthand assessment of the conditions of the thermal plants,which are targets of a major government-funded repairs,and to hear from site engineers.
While inspecting the facilities, Dr. Yumkella noted with delight the actions and reform policies his sector was taking and implementing to remarkably and productively transform the energy sector.
He announced that funding for repairs of the thermal machines has been approved by President Bio,adding that the Ministry of Finance was now acting on the instructions of the president.
“With genuine commitment to realizing the vision of His Excellency,repairs of the thermal plants at the two facilities will be completed in July 2025. Together,the two will eventually contribute 26MW to Freetown’s energy supply,” he said,adding that the effort was crucial to reducing reliance on the Karpowership.
The energy sector head thanked President Julius Maada Bio and stakeholders in the energy sector for convening the Energy Sector Retreat in December of last year. He urged site engineers to be dedicated to duty and to be professional in the discharge of their obligations.
Dr. Yumkella was accompanied by a host of dignitaries and energy sector stakeholders,including the Deputy Minister ll, Edmond Nonie,representatives from EGTC ,EDSA and PI-CREF.
With the energy sector and the Feed Salone agenda being inextricably linked,reforms continue in the sector.
