A high-level delegation from the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice arrived in Sierra Leone on Tuesday to engage with local authorities on the enforcement of regional court judgments.

The visit, which runs from Feb. 9 to 13, aims to strengthen cooperation between Sierra Leone’s Competent National Authority (CNA) and the ECOWAS Court, as well as to address delays and challenges in implementing court decisions.

The delegation, led by ECOWAS Court President Justice Ricardo Cláudio Monteiro Gonçalves and Vice President Justice Sengu Mohamed Koroma, will hold discussions with senior government officials, including ministers, the Chief Justice, and the Speaker of Parliament. The programme also includes technical presentations and meetings with civil society groups.

“The mission seeks to review existing enforcement mechanisms, share best practices, and ensure ECOWAS Court rulings are effectively operationalised in Sierra Leone,” the delegation said in a statement.

The visit is part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS and underscores the regional body’s commitment to promoting human rights, strengthening rule of law, and enhancing judicial cooperation across West Africa.

Implementation of ECOWAS Court judgments has faced recurring challenges across the region, with some rulings delayed or only partially enforced, according to officials.

Sierra Leonean authorities said they welcome the engagement and are committed to improving enforcement processes.
