Deputy Minister Opens Pre-School in Segbwema to Boost Early Childhood Education By Fumi Davies

A new pre-school funded by Deputy Minister of Technical and Higher Education Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara and his family has been handed over to the community of Segbwema in Kailahun District, in a move officials say will strengthen early childhood education under the government’s Free Quality School Education (FQSE) initiative.

Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh, who attended the ceremony on Saturday alongside religious leaders, government officials and residents, described the school as a milestone in community-driven development.

“You cannot fix a broken system in one day, but what we are witnessing here is real progress,” Sengeh said. “Early childhood development is critical, and this school is part of that transformation.”

The pre-school was built entirely with personal funds from Aziz-Kamara, who said the project was a way of giving back to the town where he began his education. “This school represents opportunity for every child who walks through its doors,” he told the gathering.

Deputy Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education Emilia K. Gorgra pledged government support, saying the ministry would provide teacher training and resources. Other speakers, including KAIDDA chairman Samuel S. Jibao, urged more public officials to emulate the gesture.

The new Methodist pre-school will cater to children in Segbwema and neighbouring communities, and is expected to open at the start of the next academic term.
