Conference of principals condemn councillor’s conduct at Kenema secondary school

The Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools in Sierra Leone’s Kenema District on Saturday condemned the behaviour of a local councillor who allegedly used abusive language in front of pupils during an altercation with a school principal.

In a statement, the group said the incident occurred on Friday at the Methodist Secondary School in Kenema, where Councillor Jusu Michael Kapu reportedly exchanged words with Mr. B. Lahai, the head of the school’s junior section.

Kapu was “strikingly seen using invective languages in the presence of pupils,” the statement said, calling the behaviour “unprincipled and unceremonious” and “adverse to the conventional behaviour of a role model.”

The confrontation caused “a considerable disruption in teaching and other administrative functions,” the group added.

The principals’ conference urged school authorities to take “robust administrative action” against Kapu and warned that such conduct could set a poor example for students.

“The executive … is immensely interested in the matter, and we are closely monitoring the situation,” said Usman Mohamed Kamara, public relations officer of the principals’ group.

Officials from the Methodist Secondary School were not immediately available for comment. Kapu could not be reached.
