Border Tension:Guinea agrees to return seized construction equipment

Tensions between Liberia and Guinea have eased after Guinean authorities apologized and agreed to return construction equipment seized near their shared border earlier this month.

The development follows a diplomatic mission by Liberian government officials to Conakry on Sunday aimed at resolving the dispute, which had raised concerns among residents near the frontier.

According to Liberian authorities, Guinean soldiers confiscated heavy construction machinery — including bulldozers and dump trucks — on March 2 near the Sorlumba border crossing, an incident that sparked anger among residents of the border town of Foya.

Liberia’s Minister of Local Government and Internal Affairs, Francis S. Nyumaline, subsequently convened an emergency meeting with Guinean officials to address the issue.

During the talks, a Guinean delegation led by border affairs officer Mamadou Diarra expressed regret over the incident and pledged to immediately return the seized equipment to Liberian authorities.

Both sides also agreed to hold a follow-up meeting on March 12 to review the findings of an investigation into the incident and discuss the establishment of joint border monitoring mechanisms.

The episode has drawn attention to wider regional sensitivities surrounding border management in West Africa. In recent years, Sierra Leone and Guinea have also experienced tensions linked to boundary disputes that led to clashes and casualties before diplomatic talks were initiated to address the issue.

Analysts say the latest diplomatic engagement between Liberia and Guinea could help prevent the dispute from escalating and strengthen cooperation on cross-border security and development.

Regional observers have urged both countries to prioritize dialogue and coordination in managing shared borders and infrastructure projects in the Mano River region.
