Sierra Leone’s military has denied allegations that one of its soldiers shot an unarmed civilian at the Makoloh Toll Gate, as residents called for an independent investigation into the incident.
Community leaders in Makoloh said a Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) soldier shot Daniel Sesay at close range at the toll facility, which operates under a concession managed by China Railway Seventh Group (CRSG).
Residents said the incident occurred after the soldier accused Sesay of assisting a vehicle to bypass the toll gate. Sesay was taken to hospital and remained in critical condition at the time of reporting, according to local leaders.
The Chairlady of Makoloh community confirmed that a shooting had taken place and said the victim was receiving medical treatment. She described the incident as traumatic and urged authorities to conduct an independent inquiry.
Some residents said tensions had been rising over the presence of armed soldiers at the toll gate and disputes linked to the use of alternative feeder roads created by the community to ease movement and reduce repeated toll payments.
When contacted, RSLAF Director of Communications Lieutenant Colonel Yayah Brima denied that soldiers had shot a civilian.
“The Army has not established any wrongdoing,” Brima said, adding that the matter should be pursued through further investigation.
CRSG did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the security arrangements at the toll gate.
The incident has sparked public debate over the deployment of military personnel at civilian infrastructure facilities and the rules governing the use of force.
No official statement has been issued regarding whether a formal investigation has been opened
