APC’s Zainab Sheriff Vows Legal Action Against Election Regulator Over Fine

More News

Popular entertainer and All People’s Congress (APC) member Zainab Sheriff has announced plans to take the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) to court in response to a fine levied against her over comments made at a recent APC rally, local media reported.

Sheriff, who has a high public profile in both entertainment and politics, said she will challenge the PPRC’s decision in court and rejected the legitimacy of the administrative penalty, which the regulator described as being imposed for “profane and provocative” remarks made at an APC mammoth rally in Attouga Mini Stadium.

The PPRC fined the APC a combined NLe350,000 for multiple violations of the Political Parties Act, 2022, including profane and inciting language attributed to Sheriff and the party’s National Secretary General during the event, earlier reports show.

Sheriff said she rejects the fine and has accused the PPRC of hypocrisy and intimidation. She warned APC leadership that she will pursue legal action if the party pays the fine on her behalf, saying any allegation against her should be tested in a court of law rather than resolved through administrative sanctions.

“If the APC pays the fine for me, I will take them to court,” Sheriff said, adding that as a citizen she has the right to free expression and that disputes over alleged wrongdoing should be adjudicated by the judiciary.

The development comes amid a series of enforcement actions by the PPRC, which has in recent months issued fines to both major political parties for inflammatory or inciting statements, highlighting increasing enforcement of political conduct rules ahead of future elections.
