Sierra Leone’s main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) has rejected the proposed appointment of Edmond Sylvester Alpha as chairman of the country’s Electoral Commission, warning the move could undermine ongoing electoral reforms and deepen political mistrust.
In a statement issued on Monday, the APC’s National Advisory Council said the proposed appointment represented “a direct assault” on the Agreement for National Unity and an attempt to bypass recommendations made under the internationally backed electoral reform process following the disputed 2023 general elections.
The party said reforms agreed under the Tripartite Committee included amending the constitution to establish an independent Search and Nomination Committee to vet and recommend candidates for the position of Chief Electoral Commissioner.
“Proceeding regardless signals a clear intention to recycle contested electoral authority rather than rebuild institutional trust,” the APC said, raising concerns about Alpha’s credibility and the potential impact on public confidence in future elections.
The APC called on the government to rescind the proposed appointment and complete the constitutional amendment process before filling the position. The amendment bill is currently undergoing parliamentary procedures and requires a two-thirds majority vote to become law.
The party warned that if the appointment was not withdrawn within 48 hours, APC elected officials would withdraw from participation in parliament, local councils and other governance structures across the country.
“The APC reserves its right to pursue further lawful and democratic measures consistent with the Constitution,” the statement added.
The dispute comes amid ongoing efforts to restore political stability after Sierra Leone’s June 2023 elections, which the APC disputed, alleging irregularities. The Tripartite Committee, involving representatives from the government, opposition and international partners, was established to address electoral concerns and recommend reforms aimed at strengthening transparency and public trust.
The government has not yet publicly responded to the APC’s latest statement.
The APC said it remained committed to peaceful and lawful action while defending constitutional governance and electoral integrity.
