Hong Kong Customs has arrested a 36-year-old woman after seizing about 3 kilograms of suspected cocaine with an estimated value of HK$2.7 million ($345,000) at Hong Kong International Airport, authorities said.

The passenger arrived on April 13 from Freetown, Sierra Leone, via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, when customs officers discovered the drugs concealed in her baggage during clearance checks, the government said in a statement.

She has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and was due to appear at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on April 15.

Hong Kong Customs said it would continue stepping up enforcement against drug trafficking through intelligence-led operations, adding that passengers from higher-risk regions would face increased scrutiny.

Authorities warned that drug trafficking is a serious offence under Hong Kong law, carrying a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million fine and life imprisonment upon conviction.
