(Reuters) — Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has banned all forms of school camping within school premises, citing widespread misconduct that threatens the integrity of the national education system.
The ministry said recent nationwide monitoring uncovered disturbing practices, including teachers neglecting lessons during regular school hours, schools organizing unauthorized camping classes, and pupils being misled with false promises regarding external examinations.

There were also reports of harassment or intimidation of students who refused to participate in such activities, the ministry added.
Authorities emphasized that the directive is aimed at safeguarding students’ welfare and ensuring that educational standards are upheld across the country.
The ministry did not specify how long the ban will remain in effect or the penalties for non-compliance but said further guidance will be issued to schools in the coming weeks.
