The detention of popular entertainer and activist Zainab Sheriff has sparked nationwide debate, prompting comments from Isata Mahoi, Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs.

Speaking to the public, Mahoi said the ministry generally avoids direct involvement in cases considered “too political,” but emphasized its continued commitment to collaborating with other state institutions on matters affecting women and children.

“The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs advocates for the welfare, protection, and empowerment of women and children across the country,” Mahoi said. “While we may not intervene in politically sensitive cases, we work with relevant authorities to ensure women’s rights and welfare are considered.”

Sheriff is facing legal proceedings over allegations of incitement and threatening language. Her detention has generated mixed reactions, with women’s rights groups and civil society organizations highlighting broader concerns about women’s voices in politics, freedom of expression, and access to justice.

Other observers have urged that the matter be left to the judicial system, emphasizing the need for due process.

The case raises broader questions about the role of gender-focused institutions in balancing neutrality in politically sensitive matters while advocating for the protection and rights of women.

As legal proceedings continue, citizens and activists are closely monitoring the justice system’s handling of the case and the extent to which institutions tasked with protecting women’s welfare can act within their legal mandate.
