The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has announced that it will intensify enforcement of helmet and seatbelt regulations nationwide beginning Monday, March 9, as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities.

In a public notice, the police said the operation will focus on the mandatory wearing of crash helmets by all motorbike riders and passengers, as well as the compulsory use of seatbelts by front-seat occupants in moving vehicles.

Motorcycle taxis, commonly known as okadas, remain a major mode of transport across the country but are also frequently linked to serious road accidents. Authorities say failure to wear protective helmets significantly increases the risk of head injuries in crashes.

Similarly, police said motorists who fail to wear seatbelts will face penalties under existing road traffic laws. Road safety advocates have long called for stricter enforcement, citing rising accident rates and limited trauma care capacity.

The SLP urged the public to comply with the regulations, describing the enforcement drive as a preventive measure rather than a punitive one.

Further details on fines and penalties were not immediately disclosed.
