Sierra Leone police said on Saturday they had arrested six people in the capital, Freetown, during a raid that led to the seizure of suspected narcotics, as authorities intensify efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse.
The arrests were made following what police described as a targeted operation in parts of the city. Officers recovered quantities of substances believed to be illegal drugs, though officials said laboratory analysis would be conducted to determine their exact composition.
Police did not immediately disclose the identities of those detained but said the suspects remain in custody pending further investigation and possible charges.
“The operation forms part of our ongoing crackdown on the circulation of illicit drugs,” a police spokesperson said, adding that investigations were continuing to determine the source and intended distribution network of the substances.
Sierra Leone has in recent years faced growing concern over drug abuse, particularly among young people, with community groups and health workers warning of rising addiction rates in urban areas.
Authorities have pledged stricter enforcement measures and closer monitoring of suspected trafficking routes. However, analysts say sustained efforts, including prevention and rehabilitation programmes, will be crucial to addressing the broader social and economic drivers of drug use.
Police urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities as investigations into the latest arrests continue.
