Germany, Youth Ministry Strengthen Partnership on Employment and Agribusiness

A high-level delegation from the German Embassy and GIZ (German development agency) paid a courtesy call on the new Minister of Youth Affairs, Mr. Ibrahim Sannoh, to explore deeper collaboration on youth employment and empowerment initiatives in Sierra Leone.

The delegation, led by Mr. Johannes from the German Embassy and Mr. Johan, Head of Programs at GIZ, focused discussions on the Youth Employment Scheme (YES)—a flagship government program under Pillar 3 of the Big Five Agenda.

During the meeting, the German team provided updates on the scheme’s structure and implementation strategy, aimed at tackling youth unemployment and promoting skills development nationwide.

Minister Sannoh welcomed the delegation and expressed gratitude for Germany’s sustained support toward youth development in Sierra Leone. He outlined his strategic priorities for the Ministry, aligning them with findings from the recent Status of Youth Report, and reaffirmed his focus on youth-led innovation, inclusive development, and sustainable job creation.

As part of this vision, the Minister introduced a new YES initiative targeting rural youth. The program supports cash crop production and poultry farming, providing young participants with technical training, starter kits, and access to markets. This integrated agribusiness model is designed to boost food security, stimulate local economies, and serve as a scalable solution across the country.

The visit reinforced the growing partnership between Sierra Leone and Germany, anchored in shared goals of empowering young people and advancing national development through practical, sustainable programs.
