In a key step to addressing the growing issue of overcrowding in the Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS) Male Correctional Centre on Pademba road Freetown, the Minister of Internal Affairs Rtd AIG Morie Lengor Esq, has on Thursday 6th February, 2025 officially launched the construction of an additional Correctional detention cells for inmates at the Male Correctional Centre on Pademba road in Freetown.
Speaking at the turning of the sod ceremony, Minister Lengor Esq, spoke about the importance of the construction of the proposed new block cells.
The project he said is part of Government’s wider strategy to reform and modernize the national prions system that aims to add more new detention facilities to decongest the Correctional facilities.
He added that plans are also underway by the Government, to address the issue of overcrowding at the Correctional facilities, by way of relocating the Male Pademba road Correctional Centre, to a more ideal facility, as the current location of the Pademba road facility is not ideal to maintain a maximum Correctional Centre.
He admonished the contractor to use his expertise skills, noting that the construction will be thoroughly monitored to ensure quality facility.
According to the Director General of the SLCS Mr. John Senesie, spoke along the same line of reviving the Correctional Center and plans are underway to construct more facilities to curb overcrowding in the facilities.
