Saikujohn Barrie I have gone through the ruling of the Sierra Leone Women’s Premier League Board on the attack of the Referees during the match between FC Kallon and Mogbwemo Queens FC on the 9th February, 2024 at MK Field, Freetown. I welcome the swiftness of the investigations and subsequent decision thereafter, even though I was made to understand that the Board didn’t speak to the victim or victims. On that note, I am still wondering as to why the board didn’t speak to the victim and how can the investigations be thorough without getting first-hand information from the victim/s. Did the victims refuse to speak to the board or the other way round? I think concluding the investigations without speaking to the victim creates doubt in the minds of rational human beings, but I will not duel much on that. In the board’s ruling it is stated that “The Match Commissioner’s Report is very clear in that the officials of FC Kallon used motherly invectives during the match aforesaid.” The report further stated, “The videos and pictures further corroborate the fact that the aforementioned events took place. It is also clear that the referees were assaulted by the individuals in the videos and the pictures. These individuals are supporters and Officials of FC Kallon.” Given the above, it is clearly clear that the use of motherly invectives by officials of FC Kallon had served as an incitement that emboldened those who took part in the attack against the female referees. Had the FC Kallon officials not used motherly invectives, their fans /supporters might not have done the same and they might not have even gone further to throw stones at the referees and invade the pitch when Marie Koroma sounded the final whistle of the match which resulted to them being beaten up and threw objects, like stones and dust, at them. Let me state herein that according to the findings of the Sierra Leone Women’s Premier League Board, there was a clear criminal conducts exhibited by the FC officials and their cohorts with an apparent intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and psychological harm on the female referees. From the aforementioned, I think the Sierra Leone Police which has been investigating the matter needs to take this matter very seriously by making arrests of the suspects especially those who were seen and identified in the videos and those named on the Sierra Leone Women’s Premier League Board report so as they help the police with investigations. I have also seen actions taken against certain persons wherein the report states, “Given the above, we make the following orders: The individuals, in the persons of Mr. Alhaji Mansaray – Safety and Security Coordinator FC Kallon, Mr. Leornard Augiden – Welfare Officer FC Kallon, and Mr. Abdul Hindolo Karim – FC Kallon are hereby banned from taking part in all future matches and from attending them in the area immediately surrounding the fields of play and from all activities relating to the Women’s Premier League Board for six (6) months from the date of this order.Further to order (1) supra, the individuals, in the persons of Mr. Alhaji Mansaray – Safety and Security Coordinator FC Kallon, Mr. Leornard Augiden – Welfare Officer FC Kallon, and Mr. Abdul Hindolo Karim – FC Kallon shall pay a fine for Le 5,000.00 (Five Thousand Leones) severally under Rule 35.1(b) of the Women’s Premier League Rules and Regulations.” In as much as these actions were taken in fulfillment of the Women’s Premier League Rules and Regulations which were designed to address conduct in and around the football pitch, I believe the Police should follow the evidence of assaults and grievous bodily harm against the female referees and charge anyone who was involved in attacking the women referees. As someone who has experienced and felt the pain of violence and lawlessness against women, I think it is high time the institutions and groups charged with the responsibility to defend women and all Sierra Leoneans, in general, stood up firm against this misconduct. The wickedness against our women is getting out of hands therefore all Sierra Leoneans with conscience need to stand up against this. Today, you people in a position to take effective action against this lawlessness against women in our societies, yet you ignore or fail to act as if nothing wrong is happening, you or your relatives may be victims of brutal violence one day. It is on this note I will leave you with the German theologian, Martin Niemoller who was an anti-Semite and an admirer of Hitler but as Nazism took hold in Germany, he saw Nazism for what it was: it was not just the Jews Hitler sought to extirpate, it was just about anyone with an alternate point of view. Niemoller spoke out, and for his trouble was incarcerated in the Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps from 1937 to 1945, and very nearly executed. While incarcerated, Niemoller wrote a poem that:First, they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me. From the above poem, one will realize that people should speak against wickedness and evil in society. Therefore, implore all and sundry to stand up in support of the female referees to get the justice they deserve. I don’t care whether they were attacked because of their gender or actions while doing their job because perpetrators always have reasons to bout our women.I rest my case

He dispelled notions of the site being overly slummy, asserting its potential for development. NaCSA and UNICEF Commence a Consultative Workshop to Develop a Cash-Plus Program for the Prevention of Child Marriage through Social Protection
– It could be recalled that on the 7th November 2023, the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) and the United Nations International Children Emergency Funds (UNICEF) engaged experts from Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, National and International Non-Governmental Organizations, donor funding agencies and the private sector to design a Cash Plus Program for the prevention of Child Marriage through Social Protection. Following several technical engagements, NaCSA and UNICEF have reconvened these experts to continue the technical multi-sectoral dialogue on preventing child marriage and teenage pregnancy, review and discuss the proposed integrated (cash+) model for the prevention of child marriage and teenage pregnancy, map out the sub-component and operationalization considerations for each component of the proposed cash+ model and revisit the theory of change for the cash+ model and commence the development of a Monitoring and Evaluation framework. In her earlier statement, Mona Korsgard, Chief of Evidence, Policy and Social Protection for UNICEF Sierra Leone elaborated on the journey to developing a cash+ initiative for the country. She noted that the consultative meeting will map out a new framework for leveraging social protection to address teenage pregnancy and early marriage. Ms Liv Elin Indreiten, UNICEF Deputy Representative (programme) in Sierra Leone reiterated UNICEF’s commitment to ensuring that the cash+ initiative is a success. She noted that the collaboration with and cooperation from implementing partners is commendable. ‘’ UNICEF has worked with the Government of Sierra Leone to develop a social protection strategy. The strategy uses a life course approach in responding to social protection. The development of the Strategy was divided between specialized technical working groups to ensure complete national ownership of the process and to ensure that the Strategy fully represents the NSPP’s commitment to a life-course approach backed by strong, common, and scalable systems. These groups addressed the program and system strengthening components, which make up the two primary parts of the strategy. Six of these groupings were created on the program side to correspond with the six major life-course stages listed in the National Social Protection Policy.’’ She ended. Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa is the Deputy Commissioner of NaCSA, in his statement of assurance, he noted that the President of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio has demonstrated unfiltered support to advancing women’s political participation, economic empowerment, access to justice, the fight against gender-based violence and the protection of children, predominantly the girl child. ‘’I am particularly honoured to be with you, not only to articulate our continued commitment towards this process but to reiterate further that the time to enhance the full potential of women and children by protecting their rights is now. Our collective actions and combined resources backed by the political ‘’will’’ have given us the platform to succeed and we must succeed. We gather here not only as representatives of our respective organizations but as advocates for the well-being and future of our nation’s adolescent girls and boys. Today marks a significant milestone as we join hands with UNICEF to explore innovative preventive mechanisms aimed at tackling the pervasive issues of teenage pregnancy and early marriage in Sierra Leone. The challenges we face are multifaceted and deeply rooted in socio-economic and cultural factors that demand a comprehensive, collaborative response.’’ He noted. In conclusion, he called on participants to recognize the gravity of the task at hand and the potential positive impact of this collaborative effort between UNICEF and the Government of Sierra Leone noting that the shared commitment will lay the foundation for a brighter and more secure future for our adolescents. ‘’On behalf of the President of Sierra Leone, I declare this meeting officially open. The National Grand Coalition Party (NGC) Condemns the Drastic Toll Gate Price Increases and Urges the Sierra Leone Government to Reconsider this Additional Burden on its Citizens
The National Grand Coalition Party (NGC) is deeply concerned about the drastic increases in toll gate prices of the Wellington-Masiaka highway announced by the Ministry of Works and Public Assets. This sudden price hike of above 100 percent is alarming and has sparked widespread distress among Sierra Leoneans nationwide. This decision comes at a time of severe economic hardship for the people of Sierra Leone, adding pressure on the already significant transportation challenges citizens face. The NGC is particularly troubled by the potential impact of this substantial toll increase on the cost of living, transportation expenses, and the overall economic well-being of our fellow Sierra Leoneans. The toll hike will undoubtedly burden our citizens with additional financial strain, affecting their ability to afford essential needs such as food, education, medical, housing, clothing, and more. Moreover, in recent months, we’ve seen increases in fuel costs, city transportation fares, and commercial vehicle charges, which have already placed a heavy financial burden on the people of Sierra Leone. The cumulative effect of these increases is alarming and will undoubtedly further entrench economic hardship on the whole population. The NGC calls on the Government to reconsider its stance in these drastic toll gate price increases as the Wellington-Masiaka highway is a vital route for many citizens who use it on a daily basis. We urge the government to prioritise the welfare of its citizens and avoid policies that contribute to the worsening economic challenges faced by the people. Instead, we encourage the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders and consider alternative solutions that are mindful of the financial realities and hardships faced by Sierra Leoneans. The NGC remains committed to advocating for the best interests of the Sierra Leonean people and will continue to hold the government accountable for policies that adversely affect the well-being of the citizens.
