Today marked a significant step forward as the Deputy Planning Minister and Development Secretary, accompanied by a dedicated technical team, undertook a thorough inspection of the proposed site for the construction of an ultra-modern market. This initiative forms part of the three major Chinese projects, including five regional markets, 100 solar boreholes, and 1500 solar street lights. Amidst concerns of encroachment and land grabbing, the inspection aimed to ensure the smooth progression of this vital development.

The Chairman of the Waterloo Market Traders Union conveyed heartfelt appreciation to the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED) for their unwavering support and dedication to the project. Recognizing the pivotal role of the ministry, he emphasized the need for expeditious construction processes.

He raised concerns about potential encroachment on the surveyed property and highlighted proactive measures taken by the traders to safeguard the land. He dispelled notions of the site being overly slummy, asserting its potential for development.

In response, the Development Secretary commended the proactive stance of the traders and urged continued cooperation with the ministry to ensure the project’s success.

Rev. Dr. Titus-Williams expressed gratitude for the innovative efforts to protect the land and announced plans to involve the Minister of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning, along with the Minister of Trade and Industry in upcoming site visits.

He reiterated the commitment to establish the proposed market as a regional hub, affirming that documentation had been forwarded to Chinese partners. Plans were underway to install signposts for clear identification and description of the site, with traders informed that their current occupancy was temporary. They would receive official notification once construction commenced, emphasizing the importance of adherence to legal protocols throughout the process.

As the inspection concluded, stakeholders were encouraged to direct inquiries to the Ministry of Planning & Economi
