The 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is set to conclude on Friday after nearly two months, marking the end of a transitional assessment period for students across the region.

For the first time, candidates were examined under both a newly introduced senior secondary curriculum and the outgoing syllabus, reflecting an ongoing shift in the region’s education system.
The transition phase covered 20 subjects under the new curriculum and 17 under the old, while English Language and Mathematics remained compulsory for all candidates.
The new senior secondary school curriculum comprises 76 subjects organised into five academic streams.
Education officials say the implementation of the new curriculum will require sustained teacher training and adaptation, adding that improvements in student performance in the newly introduced subjects are expected to take time.
