The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with its sub-vented agencies—the National Tourist Board (NTB) and the Monuments and Relics Commission—successfully staged the second edition of the Ecotourism Float Parade through the streets of Central Freetown on Saturday.

The colorful and engaging roadshow, part of the ongoing 2025 Ecotourism Trail, aimed to raise awareness about sustainable tourism practices and promote environmental consciousness among the public. The parade served as a platform to urge citizens to adopt eco-friendly habits, maintain hygiene, and help keep their surroundings clean.

Starting from Eastern Police and winding through Garrison Street, PZ, Cotton Tree, Kroo Town Road, St. John, Zonta Bye-Pass, and ending at Kingharman Road, the event attracted enthusiastic crowds. Locals lined the streets, applauding the vibrant displays and applauding the Ministry’s efforts to bring the ecotourism message directly to the people.

The parade featured a dynamic blend of cultural displays, music, dance, drama, and artistic performances. Notable acts included comedy sketches by popular entertainer “Wan Pot”, live performances by local artists, and an acrobatic showcase by the Sierra Leone National Gymnasts, all promoting key messages about environmental preservation and responsible tourism.

Tourism Minister Nabeela Tunis emphasized Sierra Leone’s growing international appeal as a destination for ecotourism. “Global marketing efforts have shown that tourists are increasingly drawn to Sierra Leone’s natural beauty, rich history, cultural diversity, and friendly people,” she said. She encouraged citizens to reject harmful practices that degrade the environment, highlighting that community support is essential for sustainable tourism to thrive.

Also present at the event were Permanent Secretary Edward Kwame Yankson, Director of Culture, Creativity and Innovation Foday Jalloh, and NTB General Manager Farmata Mida Carew, alongside ministry staff who actively engaged the public with messages of sustainability and cultural pride.

The float parade is part of the Ministry’s broader push to integrate tourism with environmental protection, while showcasing Sierra Leone’s potential as a leading ecotourism destination in West Africa.
