Sierra Leone to Receive Deported West African Migrants Under U.S. Arrangement

Sierra Leone has agreed to receive hundreds of West African migrants deported from the United States under a new third-country arrangement, the country’s foreign minister said.
Foreign Minister Timothy Musa Kabba said the deal forms part of broader U.S. efforts to accelerate deportations by transferring migrants to third countries willing to accept them.
According to reports, the first group of 25 deportees — from Senegal, Ghana, Guinea and Nigeria — is expected to arrive in Sierra Leone on May 20.

Details of the agreement, including the legal framework and conditions under which the migrants will be received, have not been made public.
The move reflects a wider U.S. policy shift toward expanding third-country deportation agreements as Washington seeks to manage rising migration and asylum pressures. U.S. authorities have increasingly pursued arrangements with countries beyond migrants’ nations of origin, particularly in cases where deportations are delayed due to legal, diplomatic or documentation challenges.
In Africa, U.S. engagement on deportations has often involved bilateral discussions with governments over repatriation cooperation, travel documentation, and, in some cases, the acceptance of non-nationals. Analysts say such negotiations can be sensitive, with African governments weighing diplomatic relations, domestic political considerations and capacity constraints.
Sierra Leone, like several other countries in the region, has previously cooperated with the United States on the return of its own nationals but has not widely been known as a destination for third-country deportees.
Rights groups have raised concerns about the growing use of such arrangements, warning that deportees sent to countries where they have no legal or social ties may face uncertainty over their status, access to services and protection.
It was not immediately clear what provisions Sierra Leone has put in place to accommodate the arrivals or whether additional groups are expected in the coming weeks.
