Admire Bio, a relative of Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, remains in police custody as investigators probe allegations of fraud, armed robbery and the sale of fake gold to two Italian nationals, according to local media reports and sources familiar with the case.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is investigating claims that the Italians were allegedly defrauded in a gold transaction valued at between $220,000 and $300,000. Reports also allege that the two foreigners were later attacked and robbed following the transaction.
Sierra Leone Police have not released a detailed public statement on the allegations, and no formal charges had been publicly announced as of Wednesday. Reports indicate that investigators are also seeking to question Bio’s husband as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The case has attracted significant public attention because of Bio’s family connection to the president and her prominence on social media.
Sierra Leone has in recent years faced growing scrutiny over allegations involving illicit gold trading, financial fraud and transnational organised crime. Authorities have repeatedly pledged to strengthen enforcement measures and improve oversight of the mining and precious minerals sector.
The investigation also comes amid increased international attention on Sierra Leone’s efforts to combat organised crime and strengthen the rule of law. European institutions and international partners have recently called for stronger action against criminal networks operating in West Africa, including those linked to financial crimes and illicit trade.
Analysts say the handling of the case is likely to be closely watched as a test of the country’s commitment to accountability and equal application of the law, regardless of political connections.
Police investigations are continuing, and authorities have urged the public to allow due process to take its course. No court has yet determined the validity of the allegations against those under investigation.
