Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Morocco Takes Formal Leave of President Bio

By Aminaash Nyande Brima

The incoming Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, Alhaji Momodu Koroma, officially took leave of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio at State House on Tuesday, 8th October 2024, before commencing his new diplomatic assignment.

Ambassador Koroma, who was accompanied by his family, took leave along with the High Commissioner to Nigeria and the Ambassador to Senegal. President Bio congratulated the diplomats, expressing confidence in their ability to meet the country’s expectations and further strengthen Sierra Leone’s strategic relationships with their respective countries for mutual benefit.

Alhaji Momodu Koroma brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in significant capacities within the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the government of the late President Tejan Kabba. In addition to his political career, he has an academic background as a university professor, physicist, and environmentalist, underscoring his commitment to education, science, and environmental issues, particularly renewable energy and sustainability.

During his tenure as Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Koroma played a pivotal role in managing the country’s international relations, helping to strengthen diplomatic ties with several nations. He also served as Minister of Presidential Affairs and Minister of Energy and Environment, where he focused on policy implementation, sustainable development, and the management of energy resources and environmental policies.

A significant highlight of Koroma’s career was his involvement in establishing the Peacebuilding Fund for Sierra Leone in collaboration with the United Nations, which supported the country’s post-conflict recovery and reconciliation efforts.

In 2007, Koroma ran as the SLPP’s vice-presidential candidate alongside Late Solomon Berewa, further demonstrating his influence within the party and national politics.

As Sierra Leone’s second Ambassador to Morocco, following the tenure of H.E. Atumanni Dainkeh, Koroma’s expertise in economic diplomacy will be invaluable in enhancing bilateral relations, especially after recent trade agreements between Sierra Leone and Morocco.

The Sierra Leone Embassy in Rabat was established on August 27th, 2021, and Ambassador Koroma’s extensive experience promises to strengthen the ties between the two nations.
