Sierra Leone on Monday laid to rest former All People’s Congress (APC) National Chairman Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray following a series of official ceremonies attended by senior government officials, political leaders and supporters.

Mansaray’s remains were earlier conveyed to Parliament for a civil lying-in-state, where lawmakers paid their final respects to the veteran politician, who once served as a Member of Parliament between 2002 and 2007 during the APC’s years in opposition.
The body was later taken to the APC party headquarters and the Freetown City Council, where party faithful, colleagues and members of the public filed past in tribute, reflecting his long-standing role in national politics and party leadership.
Tributes poured in from across the political divide. Former president Ernest Bai Koroma described Mansaray as a dedicated party stalwart who played a significant role in rebuilding the APC.
Officials of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) also honoured his service to the nation, highlighting his contributions in government and public life.
President Julius Maada Bio extended condolences to the bereaved family, noting Mansaray’s years of service as Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations and later as Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources following the APC’s return to power in 2007.
Mourners, including government representatives, opposition figures and supporters, gathered in large numbers throughout the day, paying their last respects before his final burial.
Mansaray had been battling a prolonged illness for more than two years prior to his death, during which he received medical attention both at home and abroad. His death was announced last week in Senegal, where he had been undergoing treatment.
A seasoned politician, Mansaray served as Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations from 2007 to 2010 before being appointed Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources. He was widely regarded as a key figure within the APC, contributing to the party’s reorganisation and governance during its return to power.
He is remembered for his contributions to Sierra Leone’s political landscape and his role in both opposition and government during a pivotal period in the country’s post-war recovery.
