Police in southern Sierra Leone have detained ten suspected illegal miners following the discovery of the body of a 5-year-old girl who had been missing for several days in Pujehun district.
The victim, Gbessay Kebbie, a pupil of Sierra Leone Muslim Brotherhood Primary School, was found dead in a stream in Taininahun community, days after she disappeared, according to local authorities.

Residents said the child went missing during a local ceremony reportedly linked to suspected diamond discoveries in the area. Her body was discovered three days later, triggering outrage among community members.
Police said investigations are ongoing, with forensic examinations yet to determine the exact cause of death. Initial reports have raised concerns about possible signs of violence.
Community leaders and the school’s headmaster have called for a thorough investigation and justice for the child, while urging authorities to ensure accountability.
Police have appealed for calm as inquiries continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
